IHI is pleased to offer the 20th Annual National Forum keynote address — entitled Tense — by IHI president and CEO Donald M. Berwick, MD, MPP, as an On Demand presentation at no charge. Don Berwick has a wide and well-earned reputation for delivering informative, entertaining and remarkably inspiring speeches at each National Forum. In this December 2008 address, he honors the significant achievements of the past 20 years and — in a letter to his medical student daughter — maps out two very different roads for the next 20.

From the widespread use of the Model for Improvement — which hangs on walls from the Mayo Clinic to a small rural health center in Malawi — to the development of a standardized hospital mortality measure; from the worldwide employment of the Breakthrough Series model to the concept of bundles; from the 100,000 Lives Campaign to the 5 Million Lives Campaign; the work that IHI has shared with thousands of committed organizations and individuals has changed the health care landscape forever.

And yet we are in such rough and stressful times. Scrutiny still prevails over trust. Measurements, goals, numbers, targets, standards, scorecards: people report feeling like gerbils on a wheel, running fast and getting nowhere.

Dr. Berwick says that these times call for a map that marks the way forward. He describes what’s on the map — including the five areas on which IHI will focus most sharply — and invites improvers to join in both a sprint and a marathon toward a future when today’s students will look back with gratitude to those who maintained both the hope and the courage necessary to bring about lasting change.
