  • Help Us Help the Environment!  The Institute for Healthcare Improvement is making a concerted effort to reduce our environmental impact at this year’s National Forum. We are focusing on the following areas:

Reduce Paper Waste:  Paper handouts for Workshops will not be provided in the meeting rooms. Handouts made available to IHI by faculty before the conference will be posted on this web page (see "Meeting Materials" tab) so attendees can review materials and print handouts to bring with them, if they choose. Handouts may also be printed on-site at the Forum at kiosks in the following locations at the Marriott World Center: Key Biscayne (North Tower) and Los Angeles. All printer paper used at the Forum is 30% or 100% recycled paper content. Workshop handouts made available to IHI by faculty can also be accessed at no cost after the National Forum on this web page.  See "Meeting Materials" tab.

Increase Ecological Food Production and Reduce Catering Waste:  Reusable water bottles have been distributed to each attendee. We encourage you to use these water bottles instead of purchasing bottled water.  There will be water stations in the back of every meeting room where you will be able to fill up your water bottle. Whenever possible, IHI worked with the Marriott World Center to eliminate paper and plastic food packaging and to use local and organic food products. Food not consumed by attendees will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Increase Recycling Opportunities:  Containers are available for you to recycle plastic, glass and aluminum containers, paper products, and name badge holders.  IHI has also requested that the Marriott World Center review and increase its recycling efforts behind the scenes.

We greatly appreciate your support in this endeavor. Please visit the Green Booth (located in the Crystal and Cypress Foyer) to give us your feedback, get more information about IHI’s efforts, and learn how you can reduce your impact on the environment when you return home. Thank you in advance for your participation!

  • Shuttle Service:  We will have complimentary shuttle transportation to the Orlando World Center Marriott & Convention Center for National Forum participants during the conference from participating hotels.  The shuttles will run approximately every 20 minutes from 6am until late evening.  Please see "Hotel and Travel" tab for details.

  • Don Berwick says the “energy of many” will power this year’s National Forum. Listen to the latest in an audio series on health care quality.

  • Satellite Broadcast on December 11-12 is also available! Learn more.

  • The co-chairs of last year's National Forum suggested creating a dynamic interchange during the 2006 National Forum and chose the highly topical theme, “whole system transformation.” This document synthesizes ideas generated at the National Forum and presents a strong case for a transformational paradigm centered on the needs and desires of the patient, family, and community.

IHI is delighted to welcome this year's keynote speakers who will be presenting during the General Conference on December 11 and 12.

  • Donald M. Berwick, MD, MPP

 The Energy of Many

The National Forum is the most powerful event of the year for those who are passionate about improving health care.

The National Forum offers something for everyone:

  • Office Practices and Outpatient Settings Professionals:  Ambulatory care is at the heart of true health care transformation. Please see pages 30-31 of the National Forum brochure for a complete list of office practice-related sessions.
  • 5M Lives Campaign Participants and Supporters:  At the 2007 National Forum, IHI and the network of hospitals, Nodes, and partners that make up the 5 Million Lives Campaign will mark the one-year anniversary of the initiative with workshops and presentations that highlight the learning and results achieved across all 12 Campaign interventions.
  • Pharmacists:  Pharmacists play an essential role in ensuring the quality and safety of care for patients. The National Forum provides a great opportunity for pharmacists to take an active role in learning and sharing the latest in quality improvement and patient safety efforts. Join other health care professionals during four days of informative and interactive sessions. Download recommended sessions for pharmacists.
  • Students:  The National Forum is an excellent place for students — physician, nursing, MHP, and pharmacy — interested in quality improvement. Join other students who are aware of and engaged with the work we need to do together to improve care as well as inpatient and outpatient work environments. Download this poster onto tabloid (11” x 17” paper) and post it at your school.
  • Trustees and Board Members:  This year's National Forum will have a special focus on leadership and governance issues.  See page 30 of the National Forum brochure for a list of sessions focused on Leadership and Governance.  For information on the CEO and Trustee Summit (Tuesday, December 11), please email Sara Reardon at sreardon@ihi.org.
  • International Attendees:  Attendees from outside the US are invited to meet with colleagues involved in health care improvements from around the world on Sunday, December 9, from 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM.  Join informal presentations given by international peers on the challenge and activities in health care systems of other countries.  Attendance is free of charge and registration is not required.  (The room for this meeting at the Marriott World Center is to be determined.  Upon arrival at the National Forum, any IHI staff member will be able to direct attendees to this meeting's location.)
  • Behavioral Health Care Professionals:  The National Forum offers specific behavioral health care content and, equally important, the opportunity to learn and adapt learning from other sectors of health care. For more information, please see page 33 in the National Forum brochure and/or download the recommended sessions for behavioral health care professionals.
