Prevention of coronary and stroke events with atorvastatin in hypertensive patients who have average or lower-than-average cholesterol concentrations, in the Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial — Lipid Lowering Arm (ASCOT-LLA): A multicentre randomized controlled trial

Sever PS, Dahlof B, Poulter NR, et al. Prevention of coronary and stroke events with atorvastatin in hypertensive patients who have average or lower-than-average cholesterol concentrations, in the Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial — Lipid Lowering Arm (ASCOT-LLA): A multicentre randomized controlled trial. Lancet. 2003;361(9364):1149-1158.

These two clinical trials found substantial reductions in cardiovascular events with the use of a statin in patients with diabetes. The benefits were independent of their baseline LDL-Cholesterol level. These findings suggest that most patients with diabetes will benefit from being put on a statin even when their LDL-C is naturally low.
