Focus on Variation:
Sort Product into Grades

Creative ways can be developed to take advantage of naturally occurring variation in products. Sorting the product or service into different grades can minimize the variation within a grade and maximize the variation between grades. The different grades can then be marketed to different customer needs.




Examples of Tests of this Change

One organization that provides primary care to underserved Americans through a network of hundreds of primary care clinics uses a care model to serve a wide range of populations. However, care teams working with unique groups have found that different populations have very different needs. For example, self-management is very important for migrant populations who may seek health care in several geographic areas, while developing community linkages is crucial when working with the homeless population.
