The “Guideline for Prevention of Surgical Site Infection, 1999” presents the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s recommendations for the prevention of surgical site infections (SSIs), formerly called surgical wound infections. This two-part guideline updates and replaces previous guidelines. International Initiatives
The World Alliance for Patient Safety initiated work on the second Global Patient Safety Challenge in January 2007. The initiative, "Safe Surgery Saves Lives," aims to improve the safety of surgical care around the world. By focusing attention on surgery as a public health issue, the World Health Organization is recognizing the importance of improving the safety of surgical care.

The Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) is a national quality partnership of organizations focused on improving surgical care by significantly reducing surgical complications. It is a unique partnership that is proving to be a transformational undertaking in health care. The SCIP goal is to reduce the incidence of surgical complications nationally by 25 percent by the year 2010.
