IHI Improving Perinatal Care Driver Diagram

This driver diagram was developed as part of the IHI Improving Perinatal Care Collaborative. A driver diagram is a kind of tree diagram, a tool to conceptualize an issue and its system components that helps to demonstrate a pathway to achieve the desired outcome.

The Perinatal Driver Diagram presents three primary drivers for reducing perinatal harm (adverse events):

  • Reduce variation
  • Improve teamwork and communication
  • Provide care that is patient- and family-centered

Teams participating in the Collaborative are testing changes in these key areas.
