The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Patient Safety Structural Measure (PSSM) reinforces practices to strengthen foundational elements associated with safe care. This article reviews how hospital leaders can prepare for the Patient Safety Structural Measure.
The PSSM is highly aligned with foundational areas presented in Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Safety: culture, leadership, and governance; patient and family caregiver engagement; workforce safety and well-being; and learning system. The companion National Action Plan Self-Assessment Tool provides a freely available platform to conduct a systemwide assessment of a hospital’s readiness for the new measures.
