The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Patient Safety Congress brings together health care leaders, professionals, and learners from across the full spectrum of patient care, all with one shared mission: To ensure safer and more equitable care for all.

This year’s gathering promises to be a uniquely transformative event, one where innovative health care improvement strategies converge with actionable insights delivered by renown experts in patient safety, quality improvement, risk management, population health and more.

At the heart of IHI Congress 2025 is the National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety, an initiative designed to enable a total systems approach to safety and reduced harm across the continuum of care. Congress attendees can anticipate deep dives into critical educational tracks: Culture, Leadership and Governance; Patient and Family Caregiver Engagement; Diagnostic Excellence; Resilient Learning Systems; and Workforce Safety and Well-Being.

Whether you are new to patient safety, an experienced health care leader, or a mid-career care professional, this Congress is for you. Join us in kicking of Patient Safety Awareness Week 2025 in San Diego, California, March 10–11, 2025.

Areas of Focus

  • Advancing Culture, Leadership, and Governance for Safety: Fostering an environment where safety is a core value, with leadership commitment, trust, transparency, and accountability driving improvements.

  • Co-designing for Patient and Family Caregiver Engagement in Safety and Equity: Advancing authentic patient and family engagement through co-design with patients, families, and care partners to create equitable, patient-centered systems that prioritize safety and address disparities in every aspect of care design, delivery, and operations.

  • Elevating Workforce Safety and Wellbeing: Ensuring the safety and resiliency of the organization and the workforce is a necessary precondition to advancing patient safety, requiring a unified, systems-based approach to eliminate harm to both patients and staff.

  • Building Resilient Safety Learning Systems: Prioritizing evidence-based practices, learning systems, and continuous improvement to minimize risks and prevent harm to patients.
